Edward Arakaki: Ast Manger JEM HI

The flexibility that this company has with me balancing school and work has been an ease because my team allows me to focus on my personal goals along with professional passions.

Aloha my name is Edward Arakaki and I have been working with JEM since September 18th, 2016. I first started off as a lifeguard and was then promoted to a coordinator (lead) after 4 months into the company.

My primary facility has always been at Disney Aulani Resort & Spa out here in Hawai’i. When I first started off I was a senior in high school and I juggled work, boys volleyball, school, and student government. While working as a lead I have learned many different things such as first aid, leadership, and medical emergencies.

Though in March 2017 I went on a leave absence due to the overwhelming amount of extracurricular activities, but I was able to come back and work. From that point on I rejoined JEM during July 2017 and worked as a lifeguard while attending college. Which in a few months I became a lead lifeguard once again in Fall 2018.

As I was working as lead I began to gain more interest in the supervisor position which then allowed my manager to observe my work ethic and dedication.

As May 2019 came around I was promoted to the Supervisor position which included multiple responsibilities from the lead and lifeguard position. Being promoted to that position allowed me to gain knowledge on the role as a leader much more. For example; I learned to manage and run a pool deck operations, assist with major emergencies, involve myself with the Disney partners such as recreation/costuming/security etc., on the training, IST coordination, and administrative work.

I fulfilled this position for about 2 and a half years and while being a supervisor I became an Instructor where I hold certifications as an ILTP instructor. During the COVID shutdown here at Aulani in 2020, I went to Great Wolf Lodge (Wisconsin Dells) to assist with operational work.

While traveling to the Dells I was able to get hindsight of how different facilities run their daily operations, and honestly, it was a very relieving time to work as a lifeguard and step back from the managing part of my role. Last but not least (drumroll…..) I was then promoted as an Assistant Manager in March 2021 (specifically St. Patricks Day)(YAY). In this role, I provide direct oversight of our lifeguard team and bring a level of organization and willingness to ensure all tasks and responsibilities are complete with precision.

All in all, I can say for a fact that JEM has been an outstanding company to work for because no matter what your ideal career choice may be they allow a definite growth in leadership.

I never thought that I would be working for JEM this long as I had the idea that this was going to be a high school job, but with the overview what this company may offer it allowed me to explore much more.

The flexibility that this company has with me balancing school and work has been an ease because my team allows me to focus on my personal goals along with professional passions.

I will continue to teach and guide many that are interested in growth and mentor them to the fullest extent. My goal has to always continue going above and beyond and showcase my dedication daily to out guests, partners, and team which JEM allows me to do such thing. If you decide to join JEM you will finally be able to see what I am talking about, YAY!!!
